We will not neglect
the house of our God.
Nehemiah 10:39 NIV
Caring for what we have, things that belong to God, demonstrates appreciation and fosters contentment. Even considering how a potato peeler simplifies life, drudgery yields to worship. I’d rather write than clean, but most of the thoughts I share came while cleaning.
We clean quickly so that we have more time for things we enjoy. Musical prayer and worship make the workload seemingly melt away. I get lost somewhere between Heaven and chores,
“Heal my heart and make it clean.
Open up my eyes to the things unseen.
Show me how to love
like You have loved me.
Break my heart for what breaks Yours,
everything I am
for Your Kingdom’s cause
as I walk from earth into eternity.”

Saturate the atmosphere of your house - His house - with His Presence while performing seemingly ordinary tasks. Let items you see, touch, smell, and hear inspire you to pray, as suggested below.
I have so much to share in the future, and so much I want to learn from you, but this will get us started.
Father, please cleanse me from the filth of all my sin, washing me thoroughly so that I may be whiter than snow…
Cleanse my heart, making it pure and holy, renewing a relentlessly loyal spirit within me (Ps. 51)…
Please saturate us with passion for You, Your Word, Your Will, Your Wisdom, people throughout Your world, and holiness…
In helping women develop prayer strategies, I suggest all pray this for their families, as well as anyone with whom they’re having relational conflicts. When our hearts are right with God, many of our problems will be resolved.
As a deer longs for
streams of water,
so I long for you, O God!
Psalm 42:1 NET Bible

Father God,
like a thirsty deer panting for an abundance of water, may our hearts desperately long for You!
And move all who call upon Your Name to rise and cry out in the night, as each watch of the night begins. Move us to pour out our hearts like water and lift up our hands to You for the hearts and minds and lives of children and families throughout the world who so desperately need You (Lam. 2:19).
It’s sometimes easier to pray for someone when surrounded by things that are special to them. I used to lie on Kristina’s bed when she was at school, praying over the details of her destiny. Look through high school annuals while praying for your children's friends. Touch their Bibles, asking God to draw them into His Word.
He will.

See pillow prayer inspiration below.
And John 10 refers to those who follow Jesus as sheep. When I see a sheep I pray that my family will clearly recognize the Voice of God and follow Him without hesitation.

I dreaded cleaning this room until considering what life would be like without a bathtub, toilet, sink, or mirror. We are so blessed to have hot and cold running water, soaps, mirrors… Jesus could have come to earth at a more convenient time in history – yet He denied Himself all we enjoy today because of the urgent need of humanity. When things get nasty, let's consider each item we have the privilege of cleaning that He chose to live without.
It reminds me to pray that vast, innumerable multitudes desire to be baptized and follow Christ, walking with Him and for Him into all places throughout the earth, baptizing others and making disciples within all nations...
I've struggled with weight most of my adult life. So whenever I weigh or clean my scale, I pray for the fruit of the Spirit, self-control (Gal. 5:23). It reminds me to pray for others struggling with food-related issues, under-eating, over-eating, or eating foods that are unhealthy.

More of You
and less of me, God.
(in the most serious sense)
May we walk in passionate humility, living as servants, bearing Your image filled with Light and Love to a world so dark and desperate…
 But in a great house
there are not only
vessels of gold and silver,
but also of wood and clay,
some for honor
and some for dishonor.
Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter,
he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful
for the Master, prepared for every good work.
2 Timothy 2:20-21 NKJV
please wash us, fill us, and then pour us out
into this dry and thirsty world…
When upset with the way things are going in our state or nation, I clean and flush the toilet and pray,
Father, please raise up God-honoring leaders and citizens who will turn hearts throughout the world back to You.
Please turn their hearts like water, Lord (Prov. 21:1)...
And please, begin with me.
Yep, I really do...

Bedrooms ~ Living Room

May we not attempt to copy the behaviors, clothing, and customs of the culture, but present our bodies to God and the world as precious, protected, and holy (Rom. 12:1-2)…
Father, help me to be content with the vast treasures You’ve given me, desiring to spend my life and resources ministering to people, not things (1 Tim. 6:6)…
We can cover the globe with world-influencing prayer before we finish making our bed each morning. While tucking covers, pray for your spouse, children, extended family, families in turmoil, all grieving, the sanctity of all human life… For every family everywhere…
please cover the earth with Your Love, Your Mercy, and Your excellent Glory…
Please cover my family and friends with Your favor as with a shield (Ps. 5:12)…
Please cover and comfort those who are cold, homeless, suffering, persecuted, dying…
Above all, love each other deeply,
because love covers over
a multitude of sins.
1 Peter 4:8 NIV
     Hatred starts fights,
but love pulls a quilt over bickering.
Proverbs 10:12 TM
God visited Samuel one evening to share a secret.
speak to our families when they rise up each morning and in the stillness of each night… Speak to us, Your servants are listening (1 Sam. 3)…
Speak to us in dreams and visions. May we respond with the same urgent obedience as Joseph when You awakened him in the night with instructions for protecting the child Messiah (Matt. 2:13-15)...
Spend us in Your call and for Your cause (Matt. 1:18-25)…
While dusting I pray,
May our spiritual descendants*
be as innumerable
as the dust
of the earth (Gen. 13:16)...
*those we lead to Christ or mentor
Writers shape public opinion - human and national destinies - for good or for evil. While walking past or dusting books or bookcases, we can pray for authors, publishers, and readers…
please expose every deception in a manner that will lead vast multitudes to Your Light and Truth...
Bless and protect the efforts and energies of God-honoring authors…
May all desperately hunger and thirst for Truth in its reverent purity and perfect entirety...
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:30-31 NIV

While cleaning special gifts, I pray for the individuals or families who gave them to me. When my grandmother died, my mother gave me a teacup Grandma bought while visiting us in Brooklyn when I was a little girl. It’s more than a sweet memory, it provides inspiration to continue the prayer we discovered in her Bible:

“God our Heavenly Father, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit, I love You and trust You.
I pray You will save my precious family and me
and all the world, and take us to be with you in Heaven when we leave this beautiful world to be with You.”
I have photographs of special people scattered throughout our home. Praying for them removes the displeasure as I dust. This is my prayer for my family and my prayer for your family, too.

Oh Father, thank You for my family!
May they not be distracted by the things of this world but rather enjoy a passion for You as David, a man after Your own Heart.
Grant them the wisdom of Daniel, the favor of Esther, the anointing of Elijah, the tender heart of Jeremiah, and the all-abandoning love of the woman who poured out her tears and most treasured resources to demonstrate her love for her Lord.
May we be extraordinarily creative and surrounded by God-honoring extraordinarily creative individuals. May we live God-honoring, destiny-motivated lives - giving all for Your honor and glory, the expansion of Your Kingdom, and the praise of Your wonderful Name.
Example: When dusting this table, I pray the above, but also seeing the candles, I pray that my family, friends, and you be perpetually set on fire with all-consuming passion for God and the mission He desires us to fulfill in this world. Seeing the grapes, I pray that we abide in Christ at all times, bearing fruit that is humanly immeasurable ~ all for His fame and honor and praise.
in this house of prayer for all nations, may we be as vessels of honor, cleansed from the corruption of our culture.
May we daily be inspired to offer ourselves as vessels of honor, sanctified and useful to You, prepared for every good work (2 Tim. 2:20-21)...

This is one of my favorite meditations, considering the sand at the seashore, in the deserts, on the mountains, in the cosmos, and on my kitchen floor...
May we walk boldly by faith and not by sight, making the most of every opportunity (2 Cor. 5:7, Eph. 5:16)...
May every step lead us more deeply into Your Presence and God-ordained Destiny...
Please grant us every place (spiritual territory) where we set our feet, just as You promised Your servant Moses (Josh. 1:3)...
May our prayers result in sweeping changes to hearts throughout the world, spiritual revolutionary manifestations through people, leaders, and laws of every nation…
How precious also
are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
If I should count them,
they would be more in number

than the sand;
when I awake, I am still with you.
Psalm 139:17-18 NKJV

I despised vacuuming until God moved me to stop complaining and spend that time praying. As I forcefully push and pull the machine across the floor, I pray for people in the news. Because of my own experience, Norma McCorvey (Jane Roe of Roe v Wade, the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in America) became a passion. I didn’t know it at the time, but as I prayed for her while cleaning homes and offices in Houston, she was cleaning apartments in Dallas. I later read that she became a Christian.

Every prayer unites with untold others, creating a dynamic force that crushes demonic strongholds that hold hearts and minds captive. This is why it’s crucial that we mobilize the people of God to pray in these dangerous days. I thank God for all who prayed for my release. So whenever pressed about an issue, I vacuum. It’s an avenue for releasing frustration through physical activity and prayer, while maintaining and adding to the life of our carpets.
Someday this guy is going to make one special lady (for whom we are now praying) very happy.
Train up a child
in the way he should go:
and when he is old

he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6 KJV 2000

While at church for Saturday prayer, one morning I looked at the carpet and began asking God to weave His church together, united, strong, and beautiful, and to use us to cover the earth.

And God, please give us spiritual territory, every place where our feet and hearts may dare to tread.
Sometimes my thoughts explode with inspiration for intercession. While vacuuming before my small group one afternoon, I thought of each carpet fiber as an individual who needed Jesus – and the vacuum as the enemy attempting to snatch them away... A multitude of fibers – individuals...
God, please hold fast to them.
Please protect them from every deceptive and dangerous strategy of the enemy of all souls.

May all recognize how fragile life truly is, spending it wisely…
A friend battling terminal cancer and I went to a tearoom where I bought us each a mug, a cherished memory and inspiration to pray her through her season of life and death. Now it moves me to pray for her husband and others battling this horrific disease.
When drinking from my church mugs, I pray for all who ever have or ever will drink coffee at Church of the Highlands. During the first three months of 2014, they served over 230,000 cups.
Mugs remind me to plead that all remain hot in their passion for God. My cabinets and counters are filled with memories that inspire prayer for various individuals, issues, or activities...
On our 15th anniversary, Church of the Highlands gave everyone a mug that listed their four key goals. This mug reminds me to pray that all drinking coffee
Know God
Find Freedom
Discover Purpose
Make a Difference.
This bears all the elements of a global spiritual revolution! I love my church!
Note the grapes on the birdhouse by the 15th anniversary mugs, on our drapery valances, and even on the chairs.
I love this inspiration so much that I decorated my kitchen with this prayer...

may my family and church family
abide in You at all times
and in all circumstances,
bearing fruit for Your glory
that cannot be humanly measured.
   I am the vine,
you are the branches;
he who abides in Me
and I in him,
he bears much fruit,
for apart from Me
you can do nothing.
 John 15:5 NASB
I clean out this beast every Monday, thanking God for the abundance of food He’s provided. It’s 24 years old and looks about as good as the day it was delivered.
A small flag near the handle reminds me to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. A Lifesaver candy reminds me to pray in agreement with all Church of the Highlands members who are holding Lifesavers, praying for someone to be saved. Photos of special people or flyers of special events – prayer. Refrigerator magnets we’ve collected from our travels remind me to pray for all who work at or are visiting an aquarium, theme park, museum, etc.
My family prays that I’ll learn how to cook – or at least manage to not burn the house down. When cleaning or cooking, it reminds me to pray that we fan into flame and keep ablaze the gift of God that is in us (2 Tim. 1:6)…
please keep my family,
friends, and church
fiercely, unquenchably hot
with passionate prayer -
faithfully pursuing You,
Your Word, Your Will,
Your Wisdom
and holiness….
My family gave me a set of stainless dinnerware. When I use or clean a knife, fork, or spoon, I thank God for my precious ones and pray that their favorite food will always be to do the Will of God.
The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!"
And let the one who hears say, "Come!"
Let the one who is thirsty come;
and let the one who wishes take the

free gift of the water of life.
Revelation 11:17 NIV

Consider putting photographs and special prayers or notes on the back of kitchen cabinet doors. When reaching for a spice or can, I'm reminded to pray for issues and individuals God has placed within my heart.

And Other Chores...

It can be a dreaded, tedious task, especially when small children produce mountains of tiny items marked by an assortment of disgusting substances.
Father God,
please clearly guide
the pathways of
the tiny feet that fill
the twenty pairs
of tiny socks...
May we be diligent
to maintain and wear
our spiritual armor
at all times…
Jesus…got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him…
"I have set you an example
that you should do
as I have done for you.
Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
Now that you know these things,
you will be blessed
if you do them."
John 13:4-5, 15-17 NIV
how I long for my family to enjoy the blessing of living as servants –
ministering to others with the same gentle attention Christ gave the disciples and even to Judas, a betrayer...
Please saturate us with passion for You, Your Word, Your Will, Your Wisdom, Your World, and holiness…
Awareness that we have a breastplate of righteousness, meaning virtue… Pray that what we wear will not distract from the reflection of Christ that we want others to see in our lives…
May all our clothing decisions honor You
and not cause others to stumble...
While ironing, I ask the Holy Spirit to bring people to mind, or post a list on the wall nearby. Above all, I pray that every circumstance make all passionately hot for Christ and the Cause of His Kingdom.
May people throughout the world surrender their broken lives to The One who makes all things new...
“Break my heart for what breaks Yours, everything I am for Your Kingdom’s cause as I walk from earth into eternity.” (Hosanna, Brooke Fraser © 2006 Hillsong Publishing)
We offer You every piece of our lives.
Please shatter every unholy passion…
On my doors, I post prayers or Scripture or prompts for things I frequently want to be reminded,

Please, make my home a house of prayer for all nations…
Father, we ask that Your Presence brood over us, protecting our hearts and our homes from any form of spiritual or physical invasion or intrusion…
Lift up your heads, O you gates!
And be lifted up, you everlasting doors!
And the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty.
The Lord mighty in battle.
Psalm 24:7-8 NKJV

Lord, as You stand knocking at the doors of human hearts, may all be quickly opened to You that You may enter and fill every lonely, hurting place (Rev. 3:20)…
Father, help me to be content with the vast treasures You've given me, desiring to spend my life ministering to people, not things (1 Tim. 6:6)...
May we be quick to recognize the difference between that which is holy from that which is hideous...
May we remain faithful to store up eternal treasures instead of spending our lives hoarding trash that will only burn in the fires (Matt. 6:19-20)...

The gold background for this post and many others on this site are from a photo of this trash can.
The background image in this and many other posts and pages, is taken from my real living room wall. Some of the background imaging is taken from the trashcan above or photos of other surfaces or textures around my house. I wanted our House of Prayer to be constructed from a real house.

Father God, we plead for vast numbers of Christians to offer themselves willingly as vigilant warriors of worship and intercession - watchmen on Your walls, not ever holding their peace but crying out day and night for the people of every nation and for the explosive expansion of Your Kingdom until Your Work and Your Will are completely fulfilled upon the earth (Is. 62:6-7)…
Father, remove the barriers between Heaven and Earth that all may encounter Your holy Presence and divine Love…
May we be strong and immovable, always working enthusiastically for the Lord because nothing we do for Him is ever in vain (1 Cor. 15:58)…
Daniel prayed three times daily before an open window. May we be reminded to pray each time we see a window…

Father God, please raise up vast, innumerable multitudes of individuals fierce, faithful, and faith-filled in their prayers...
We lift up those living in the “10/40 Window” (a geographic region 10 and 40 degrees north of the equator in which the Gospel needs to be preached). And while the Truth is desperately needed in this zone, we pray even more fiercely for America, which has been given unrestricted access to the Gospel, but has rejected the Truth. A far greater account will be demanded of us.

View from my kitchen desk window.

A friend gave me a plant while she was battling breast cancer. I’ve had it over twenty years. I’m reminded to pray for her and her family when I see or water it. Prayers for botanists, gardeners, plant nurseries...

Please open the eyes of all hearts to the extreme wonder of Your divine creativity…
May we be planted by streams of water – leaves never withering, yielding fruit in its season; may whatever we do for the expansion of Your Eternal Kingdom prosper (Ps. 1:3)...
